I can't find the original thread (largely due to laziness, but this will be easier to find, anyway). I postponed promoting the Outerspace types to the Astronomy commons because a couple new types were added, and I wanted to make sure people (especially gordon!) had a change to comment.  The new types are Planetographic coordinate system and Celestial object with coordinate system.

One thing I noticed is that the prime meridian property of "Celestial object with coordinate system" expects Extraterrestrial location, which made the Greenwich Observatory into an extraterrestrial location.

Have to see how the planetary coordinate system will work with celestial body, seems OK.

              +1 delaying promotion.

the bit of googling i did into Planetographic coordinate systems made me realise that they are really not all standardised, and different astronomy magazines use different systems, especially, apparently, for jupitor. so Planetographic coordinate systemreally needed to specify which system the data is using, which means Celestial object with coordinate system must now become a commons type.

...im way over my head now with this stuff. no idea what im doing. could really use an astro expert.

Yeah, there's a lot of competing standards... If we can't all agree on what's a planet, how can we agree on using single Galaxy classification system (there are at least three?) or coordinate system. I hoped we could have attracted an astronomical expert before now as well ;)
